The House of Representatives directed the Federal Government to suspend the policy immediately. They also pleaded with Labour (under the umbrella of NLC and TUC) to reconsider on its decision to embark on a nationwide strike on Monday, January 9th, 2012.
The House also resolved that representatives of government and labour should meet on Tuesday for dialogue. It said the subsidy should be suspended pending the passage of the 2012 budget. The House set up an oversight committee to this effect.
This conclusion came after hours of deliberations in an emergency session to hear the views of those for and against the removal of petrol subsidy by the Goodluck Jonathan-led administration.
