Book review: Law 7 of the 21 Irrefutable laws of leadership.

Law of Respect

INTRODUCTION:
"When people respect you as a person, they admire you. When they respect you as a friend, they love you. When they respect you as a leader, they follow you".

REVIEW:
Though he started with a story, the author made clear how important respect gained from followers could do so much for a leader. He stressed with the story of Harriet Tubman what obeying this law would pay to leadership.

Furthermore, the author answered few questions like; what causes one person to respect and follow another? Is it because of the qualities of the leader? Is it due to a process the leader and follower engage in? Here are his answers which were born out of personal experience;
1. Natural leadership ability: if you posses natural leadership ability, people will follow you...but one of the greatest pitfalls in leadership is to depend on talent alone.
2. Respect for others: When leaders show respect for others, they gain respect from others.
3. Courage: Good leaders do what's right even at the risk of failure, in the face of great danger and under the brunt of relentless criticism.
4. Success: When leaders are successful in their endeavours, people respect them. When they succeed in leading the team to victory, the followers believe they can do it again.
5. Loyalty: When leaders stick with the team...even when the going gets tough...followers respect them and their actions.
6. Value added to others: Perhaps,the greatest source of respect for a leader comes from his or her dedication to adding values to others.

His work goes on to educate us on how to measure our level of respect which he explained is through knowing the calibre of people you attract and knowing the people who sign up for commitment or change anchored by you.

Closing, he reminded us of the law of the lid and process which sums up that there is always a room to grow and the more we grow, the more our respect rises and the better people we attract.

LESSONS:
1. Take a look again on the qualities that help leaders gain respect, evaluate yourself and start developing on them. Be conscious.
2. Read the 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership by John C. Maxwell...Law 7.
